Annette Marie Sarah Kellerman, the ‘Australian Mermaid’ (6 July 1887 – 5 November 1975) led an amazing life. She was a distance swimmer, diver, theatrical performer, mermaid, feminist, fitness advocate, silent-movie star and advocate for the change of women’s swimwear. She is often credited for inventing the sport of synchronised swimming after her 1907 performance of the first water ballet in a glass tank at the New York Hippodrome. For those of you out there, like me, who don’t know anything about this wonderful woman this Marie Claire article “Annette Kellerman – Australia’s Forgotten Icon” is well worth a read.
The new Annette Kellerman Aquatic Centre opens today and appears to be well named! I am actually a little bit excited about this and can’t wait to see what the facilities are like. Renovating my house this year has meant I have become a big fat slob and have completely ignored my gym membership. So in 2011 I am going to restart my fitness regime and this centre might be a good option to look at – 3 pools, gym and fitness programs (yoga, pilates, strength training and cardio equipment) and of course a cafe.
The centre is having an open day today (Saturday 11 December) from 10am, so check it out for yourselves. If this weather stays this muggy those 3 pools are going to be very popular!
NOTE: Entry on Saturday will be from Black Street only. An official opening ceremony will be happening on January 26 2011 as part of the Australia Day celebrations
